I can't answers your questions about simulator, but ++debug opens a
terminal with gdb attached to each simulator process.
Actually, depending on what you're trying to do, there's an alternate
implementation of the simulator that runs sequentially that may be
much easier to work with. Have a look at README.bigsim_quick in the
root of the Charm++ distribution, or the copy in the repository
browser:
